Workers assembling a massive highway ramp near Lansing had only seconds to avoid a 240-ton section of steel girders which came crashing down, killing one man and injuring three others.
Crews returned to the scene Saturday began to retrieve the body of Daniel Lopez, an ironworker and father of four from Munster, Indiana. Glenwood firefighters recovered Lopez' body around 9:40 p.m. Saturday.
On Friday, Lopez was among a half-dozen ironworkers installing a section of the ramp that would link Interstate Highways 80 and 94.
About 5 p.m. the crew was placing the last of six, 40-ton girders atop two 25-foot-high concrete piers when the section fell and killed Daniel Lopez and injured three others.
Two other workers were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and one was treated at the scene, officials said.
