Pedestrian Killed By Train

September 27, 2005

After an inbound train struck and killed a pedestrian in Roselle, the delay affected more than 9,000 riders of the Metra Milwaukee District West line, said a spokesman for the commuter rail agency said.

The accident occurred at about 5:20 a.m. near Park Street in Roselle which lies just west of the western suburb's commuter station, said a spokesman.

The No. 2202, a local due at 6:15 a.m. at Union Station in downtown Chicago, collided with the 48-year-old Wheaton man who was walking on the tracks. The victim's identity has still not been released.

The train was held at the scene about an hour as emergency crews responded after the accident. Other trains were allowed to move slowly past the accident scene which caused all the trains to run about 10 to 25 minutes late in arriving downtown.

According to the rail agency, the accident affected an estimated 9,300 commuters because of the delays. The train schedules were expected to return to normal by the end of the morning rush.

A representative of the DuPage County Coroner's office was at the scene shortly after the accident this morning as various agencies were still investigating why the man was walking along the tracks.
