One Killed, Five Injured in Separate Accidents

August 19, 2005

One person was killed and five were injured in traffic accidents in the Chicago area. A motorcyclist was killed on Chicago's South Side, and a second motorist allegedly involved in the accident was stopped from fleeing by bouncers from a nearby bar, police said.

Officers were called to 5500 South Homan Avenue around 4 a.m. after the motorcycle was struck by a 1994 Chevrolet coupe, said police spokeswoman JoAnn Taylor. Marco Cobarrubias, 39, of the 700 block of 57th Street in Clarendon Hills, was declared dead at Holy Cross Hospital, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. The driver tried to flee but was held by bouncers from the Fox Lounge, at 3314 W. 55th St., until police arrived, Taylor said.

On Chicago's North Side, five people were injured when a 2003 Mercedes sport-utility vehicle slammed into a Chicago Fire Department ambulance in the Lincoln Park neighborhood around 2 a.m., police said. After the wreck near the intersection of Fullerton and Southport Avenues, police charged 44-year-old David Rosenthal, of the 1400 block of West Wolfram Street in Chicago with failing to yield to an emergency vehicle and going too fast for conditions, Taylor said.

A paramedic trainee was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and a 15-year-old boy in the ambulance was taken to Children's Memorial Hospital, fire officials said. Two paramedics were taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in fair condition, Taylor said. The hospital would not release the condition of the teenager. Rosenthal was traveling south on Southport when the collision occurred, sending the ambulance into a third car, Taylor said. A woman in the third car was treated at Illinois Masonic and released. Rosenthal did not seek medical treatment, officials said.
