A 19-year-old Illinois man remained in critical condition today after falling down some stairs at an apartment building during the State Street Halloween celebration.
The 19-year-old, Nicholas Giancana of St. Charles, Ill., was apparently intoxicated early last Saturday when he fell backward on a staircase outside an apartment in the 1300 block of St. James Court and struck his head, police spokesman Mike Hanson said. Police were called to the scene at about 3:50 a.m. Investigators believe Giancana, an Elgin Community College student, was at the State Street celebration Friday night at some point before the accident.
In another incident, a 22-year-old Chicago man died over the weekend, but police couldn't say if the death of Adam Haese was connected to the Halloween celebration. The recent UW graduate was found by friends Sunday in a downtown apartment in the 400 block of Russell Walk. He was taken to Meriter Hospital where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy performed Monday on Haese indicated no significant trauma or injury, Dane County Chief Deputy Coroner Kurt Karbusicky said. He said a ruling on the cause and manner of death wouldn't be issued until toxicology test results are available, which could take several weeks.
Police said they arrested 468 people during the weekend, racking up a total of 700 charges or citations. Police referred 43 misdemeanor charges and seven felony charges to the Dane County District Attorney's Office. Police jailed 107 people for the more serious offenses. Eight people were taken to the Dane County detoxification center for overconsumption of alcohol, and three others were taken to local hospitals because the detox facility was full.
