Young Man Runs Red Light, is Killed by Truck

August 19, 2005

A family mourned a 23-year-old Elk Grove Village man who died after his car ran a red light and was struck by a truck on Lake Street in Elmhurst. Officials pronounced Matthew Allan Morgan dead of head injuries shortly after 7 p.m. at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital, Illinois State Police Sgt. Allison Renaud said.

At about 5:39 p.m., Morgan was driving northwest on Lake Street when his Pontiac Bonneville passed through a red traffic light, Renaud said. A Chevrolet Silverado pickup was motoring east through the intersection when it struck the driver's side of Morgan's car. The impact threw the Silverado spinning into the path of an eastbound Cadillac Seville, Renaud added. All three vehicles were totaled. Alcohol did not contribute to the accident, she added.

The violent collision completely caved in the Bonneville's driver's-side door, preventing Morgan's fastened seat belt from saving him, Renaud said. The drivers of the two other vehicles and a passenger riding in the Seville escaped injury. The drivers of the Silverado and Seville knew each other and were following each other on their way from work.
