An off-duty Chicago police officer was involved in a fatal crash in northwest Indiana Monday night. Alcohol may have been a factor in the accident.
The officer is a three-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department. At the moment, he is not charged in connection with the crash. But he is off the street during the investigation.
The fatal crash took place at the intersection of Martha and Indianapolis Boulevard in Highland, Indiana.
Police believe both of the drivers had been drinking. Highland police say the drivers of both cars had blood-alcohol levels above the legal limit.
Just before midnight, one car going southbound on Indianapolis Boulevard collided with a car turning at Indianapolis and Martha. In the turning vehicle, one of the passengers was killed. William Alvarez is believed to be from Griffith, Indiana.
