Four Injured In Car Accident

October 28, 2005

Four people were hurt in a two-vehicle accident on Alpine Road, just south of Harlem High School, Wednesday, September 14, afternoon.

One of the victims was taken by helicopter to OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center and three others were taken by ambulance to area hospitals.

According to Winnebago County Sheriff's Investigation, Clinton Barney, 17, was driving a 4-door Chevrolet north on Alpine when he apparently turned left in front of an oncoming van shortly before 2:30 p.m.

Clinton Barney had two passengers in his car when the accident happened. Sheriff's office did not release the name or age of one of the passengers who was transported by helicopter.

Clinton Barney and his another passenger, Stefanie Tufly,17, were transported to a local hospital by ambulance.

The third injured person was a pedestrian. He is 24-year-old. His name was not immediately available, but Sheriff Sgt. Jeff Schroeder of Winnebago County said that his injuries were not serious because he was not directly hit by any of the cars.

The driver of the van was not injured.

The accident is still under investigation with charges pending.

TWO KILLED FROM INJURIES SUSTAINED IN CARBONDALE CAR ACCIDENT

A 2-year-old girl and her grandmother are dead as the result of a vehicle accident on Pleasant Hill Road on Tuesday, September 13.

The accident happened at the intersection of Pleasant Hill and McLafferty Roads at about 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Kristy Johnson, 28, of Murphysboro, was driving a car in which were her 2- year-old daughter, Kamryn Lee of Murphysboro, Robert Lee, Jr., 54, the child's father, and her mother, Helen Johnson, 83, of Cobden.

According to police report, Kristy Johnson apparently turned from McLafferty onto Pleasant Hill Road into the path of a westbound van and hit the van.

Both Kamryn Lee and her grandmother, Helen Johnson were seriously injured and taken to the Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

Kamryn Lee died at about 3:45 p.m. and Helen Johnson died at about 7:55 p.m.

Kristy Johnson and Robert Lee were also injured and taken to the hospital with injuries.

The van was driven by Jonathan Sutherland, 16, of Carbondale. No one in the van was injured.

For the time being, Kristy Johnson was issued a citation for failure to yield.

Randy Mathis, Carbondale Police Officer, said that there may be more charges when the investigation will be complete.
