Fiery Crash Kills College Professor

A biology professor Muffie Slater, 54, from Hampshire was killed when her car burst into flames after she apparently missed a stop sign in Plato Township and was hit by another vehicle, authorities said Friday.

Kane County Sheriff Lieutenant Don Kramer said of the Thursday accident that Muffie Slater was heading west on McDonald Road when she went through the stop sign and was hit by a sport-utility vehicle heading north on Dittman Road.

Slater's car burst into flames due to impact said Firefighter-Paramedic Dennis Demes of the Pingree Grove and Countryside Fire Protection District.

Slater of the 14N400 block of U.S. Highway 20 in Hampshire, was burnt to death.

The driver of the sport-utility vehicle, a Hampshire resident, had minor injuries.
