88-year old Woman Dies in Three-Car Accident

August 19, 2005

An East Alton woman was killed in a three-car crash at Veterans Parkway and Lawrence Avenue.

Adele Nelson, 88, was pronounced dead at Memorial Medical Center at 11:15 a.m., according to Sangamon County Coroner Susan Boone. Nelson had no outward signs of injury, and an autopsy is scheduled.

Police said Nelson was a passenger in a 1990 Chevy Geo Prism that was traveling north on Veterans about 10:40 a.m. Her driver was an 82-year-old Alton woman. As the Prism began turning west onto Lawrence, a southbound 1996 Eagle Vision, driven by a 23-year-old Springfield man, broadsided the car. The collision forced the Prism into a 2002 Dodge minivan driven by a 42-year-old Chatham man, police said.

Nelson, her driver and the Springfield man were taken to Memorial. The 82-year-old Alton woman was listed in critical condition at Memorial, and the Springfield man was treated and released. The Chatham man wasn't injured.
